Mark Denton

Mark Denton – Biography Draft Builder. Innovator. First Professional. Growing up in Merriam, Kansas, Mark Denton became one of the Kansas City area's premier BMX racers. He raced for Blue Hills Bike & Hike before joining the Jameson Distributing BMX Team (co-sponsored by Patterson Racing). His favorite bicycle was the PK Ripper. Mark is recognized as the first Kansas City-area rider to turn professional, likely in 1981, before leaving BMX to pursue college baseball.

The Denton Family Legacy

Mark's accomplishments cannot be separated from the remarkable family behind him. Billy and Burl Denton opened the family fence company to help fabricate the Optimist VFW BMX Track starting gate, providing shop space, materials, and encouragement. Brothers Ralph and Wylie Denton helped build numerous Kansas City BMX tracks with heavy equipment and volunteer labor. Billie Denton, alongside Drew Jameson's mother, drove countless young racers to out-of-town events, making national competition possible for many riders. The family's involvement continued through Brian Denton, another accomplished Kansas City racer.

Building the Optimist VFW BMX Track

Working with Drew Jameson and a dedicated volunteer crew, Mark helped build the Optimist VFW BMX Track. Drawing on his fabrication background, he co-designed and built one of BMX's earliest fully pneumatic starting gates. The 28-foot platform was fabricated from 2×2×1/4-inch steel angle iron and surfaced with expanded metal. The gate was constructed from Schedule 40 galvanized tubing with an expanded metal face. Unlike many gates of the era that dropped by gravity after release, this design used pneumatic power to both drive the gate downward and raise it back into position for the next moto—the same operating principle used by modern BMX starting gates.

Legacy

Mark Denton's legacy extends far beyond race results. He helped build tracks, fabricate equipment and shape Kansas City BMX during its formative years. His story is inseparable from the Denton family's enduring contribution to the sport.
