Some racers win through raw power. Others through determination. Tim Sparks earned respect because he possessed something every rider admired but few truly mastered—extraordinary bicycle control.

From the moment Tim entered Kansas City BMX, fellow racers recognized that he could do things on a bicycle that others simply could not. Whether carving through a corner, floating over a jump, or finding speed where others lost it, Tim’s riding combined precision, finesse, and seemingly effortless control.

He made difficult things look easy.

Emerging During Kansas City BMX’s Growth

Tim began racing during the rapid growth of BMX in Kansas City, becoming part of one of the strongest generations of racers the area would ever produce.

Racing for Gary’s Bike Mart’s DG Team, Tim quickly established himself as one of the area’s premier competitors. He advanced rapidly through the proficiency levels, traveled throughout the Midwest, and earned respect wherever he raced.

Tim did not need years to develop the instincts of an accomplished rider. The ability was already there. Once someone helped him reach the track, what Tim did on the bicycle was entirely his own.

A National-Level Performance

Among Tim’s finest documented accomplishments was a second-place finish in class at the 1981 ABA Summer National in Lubbock, Texas.

His performance confirmed what Kansas City racers already knew: Tim Sparks could compete with the best riders in the country.

This was not simply a promising local racer performing well away from home. Tim had demonstrated that his smooth, technical riding translated to national-level competition.

A Rider’s Rider

Ask former racers about Tim Sparks and the conversation usually shifts from trophies to talent.

Tim was not simply fast. He was smooth.

Everything about his riding appeared effortless. He found speed through technique rather than brute force, making him one of the most naturally gifted riders of his era. Other racers watched Tim not only to compete against him, but also to learn from him.

His ability could be seen in the smallest details: the line he selected through a corner, the way he carried momentum over an obstacle, and the calm control he maintained while others fought the bicycle beneath them.

The Next Step

In 1982, Tim joined the Turner’s Schwinn National Team, one of BMX’s premier factory-supported programs.

He later became a member of the Jameson Distributing Team, continuing to race alongside many of Kansas City’s leading competitors. His progression reflected both his natural ability and the respect he had earned within the sport.

Two Mains at the 1983 Grands

One of Tim’s most revealing performances came at the 1983 ABA Grand Nationals.

After spending several months away from the bicycle, Tim entered Class, Open, and Cruiser. Despite the time away from racing, he advanced to two of the three main events—Open and Cruiser.

The Open main included Steve Veltman and Jason Griggs. Billy Griggs competed in the Cruiser main. Tim did not reach the podium in either event, but simply qualifying for two Grands mains after months away demonstrated the depth of his natural ability.

In the Cruiser main, Tim reportedly led the field into the first corner. Billy Griggs attempted to move underneath him, but Tim held his line. The two riders collided midway through the turn, ending Tim’s opportunity for a top finish.

The crash became one of the enduring stories of Tim’s racing career. He had not returned merely to participate. He had returned, reached two main events, and challenged some of the strongest riders in the country.

A Rare Surviving View

A limited sequence preserved in the USABMX Photo Archive shows Tim holding the inside line during a qualifying moto at the 1983 Grand Nationals. Photographs appearing shortly afterward in the sequence show Billy Griggs competing in the same race.

BMX photographers generally concentrated on the leader and the riders nearest the front, ensuring that they had usable photographs if one of those racers ultimately won. Tim’s prominent place in the sequence is consistent with his running at or near the front of the qualifying race.

The photographs do not show the later Cruiser-main collision. Their importance lies elsewhere.

At present, the USABMX Photo Archive contains no known photographs of a main event from that race and no photographs of the classes immediately before or after this qualifying group. The surviving sequence is therefore a rare visual record of the 1983 Grands—and it happens to include both riders involved in the memorable Cruiser-main incident later that day.

Historical Significance

Tim Sparks represented the technical side of BMX racing—the belief that control, timing, and instinct could be every bit as powerful as physical strength.

His national results established his place in the competitive record. His performance at the 1983 Grands demonstrated something results alone cannot fully explain. After months away from racing, Tim returned and advanced to two main events against riders of the highest caliber.

That was not merely preparation or conditioning. It was natural ability operating at an extraordinary level.

Legacy

Tim’s legacy is not measured only by the races he won or the teams whose jerseys he wore. It survives in the memories of the riders who watched him, competed against him, and recognized that they were witnessing an unusual talent.

Tim Sparks was a rider’s rider—fast, precise, remarkably smooth, and respected by those who understood just how difficult his effortless style really was.
